Слоган:«The most gripping and dramatic personal story of this decade is on the screen! » В основу «Истории Монахини» легла подлинная история жизни бельгийской девушки Габриель ван дель Маль, дочери знаменитого хирурга, в 1927 г. I noticed an inordinate amount of digital noise in about the first 1/5 to 1/4 of the film but it disappeared and the image began looking much better with some sharper scenes mixed in with some that were not quite as tight (Zinnemann occasionally used a soft focus lense). Contrast is very good and the color sequences of the Congo (actually Kisangani, Democratic Republic Of Congo) look excellent. Subtitles and audio are at Warner's high standard of consistency but I am disappointed that the only extra is a trailer as the film is marvelous and deserved more - one of both Zinnemann and Hepburn's best efforts. I found it an informative and intense expression of the commitment to become a nun.

Mildred Dunnock is a gentle, maiden aunt of a nun; Patricia Collinge, a gossipy cousin. Peter Finch and Dean Jagger are the only males in the cast of any stature. Finch, as an intellient, attractive agnostic, conveys a romantic attachment for Hepburn, but in terms that can give no offense. Dagger is Hepburn's perturbed loving father but contributes a valuable facet on the story. Despite the seeming austerity of the story, Zinnemann has achieved a pictorial sweep and majesty. Franz Planer's Technicolor photography has a Gothic grace and muted splendor, Franz Waxman's score is a great one, giving proper place to cathedral organs and Congo drums. 1959: Nominations: Best Picture, Director, Actress (Audrey Hepburn), Adapted Screenplay, Color Cinematography, Scoring of a Dramatic Picture, Sound
Hepburn's darkly circled eyes, drawn face, taut and nervous frame, and constant edge of fatigue work brutally to reflect Sister Luke's worry that should her disease be uncovered, she will be sent back to Belgium for good. See more The supporting performances are wonderful, particularly all of the ranking sisters whose guidance rules the lives of Sister Luke and her fellow sisters. Mildred Dunnock is here a placid and patient mistress of the postulants. Dame Peggy Ashcroft is a compassionate, but obedient head of the mission in Aftica. And Dame Edith Evans is old-school Catholicism at its best, firmly guiding her nuns in a clear-eyed manner than can look, but is not meant to be, cruel. Peter Finch is young and dashing—a prototype of the rude doctors we see on TV all the time. Other viewers of this film detect some sexual tension between Hepburn and Finch's Dr. Fortunati, but I didn't see it. Hepburn's Sister Luke truly seems modest, even asexual, to me. When a native man asks her why a young woman like her doesn't have a husband, rather than try to explain the difficult concepts of Catholicism, she says quite believably, "I do have a husband.

At the end of the day, it's up to you to decide whether you want to believe that parts of The Nun are based on fact, but I'm probably just gonna err on the side of caution and never enter a convent again. Also, it might be a good idea to avoid all children with angel wings riding on a two-headed dragon. Goodbye! This content is imported from YouTube.
